Super Bowl LIII is in Atlanta, GA on February 3, 2019

Imagine a Super Bowl where the commercials take on a different approach. The witty jokes are set aside, the background music muted and the actors aren’t focused on selling a particular product. Instead, the scene goes like this—

{Actor 1 approaches Actor 2 while riding a scooter}

Actor 2: Hey! Nice ride.

Actor 1: Thanks, I am taking it for a test drive before the big game next weekend?

{Actor 2 looks puzzled}

Actor 1: Are you serious?! It’s the Super Bowl!

Actor 2: When is the Super Bowl?

Actor 1: At least tell me this, who is playing in the Super Bowl?

Actor 2: Sorry. I am drawing a blank. But tell me when and where, and I’ll be there!

{Scene fast forwards to Super Bowl weekend in the congested streets of Atlanta, GA}

**Actor 1 & Actor 2 are both driving scooters**

Actor 1: We have a couple blocks to go!

Actor 2: Watch out!!!!

{Car hits Actor 1 and the screen goes dark}

Bold Lettering across the TV reads:

Safety At The Super Bowl in Atlanta

Our intention with this unconventional, yet realistic commercial is to get you thinking about safety during the Super Bowl. Atlanta, our city is certainly known for its traffic congestion, but now multiply those traffic problems alongside the biggest game of the year. Unfortunately, personal injuries will be a major concern with the usage of scooters like LIME, Bird and Uber. According to a recent article, Grady Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room was seeing up to 20-25 scooter-related injuries each month. This figure does not include pedestrians who have been hit by scooters.  City officials, as well as healthcare professionals, expect the number of ER visits to increase during the events surrounding the Super Bowl in Atlanta.

Electric Scooter Accidents in Atlanta

To counteract these concerns, there will be an obvious increase in law enforcement as the streets of Atlanta will be filled with party-goers, spectators and media personnel. Even with the increase in personnel, to keep millions of people completely safe is a tall order, especially when motorized vehicles, an increase in pedestrian traffic and the increased use of alcohol is present. While there is bound to be accidents, the Atlanta City Council did pass legislation to bring order to electric scooters just in time for the Super Bowl. The new regulations state that no scooter should be parked anywhere, other than a sidewalk, at a bike rack or up against a building, in a manner that doesn’t obstruct the path of pedestrians. The scooters should leave at least 5 feet of clearance for pedestrian traffic and should never be ridden on sidewalk faster than 15 miles per hour. Additionally, all riders should wear helmets for protection, while pedestrians should be on high-alert for all motorized vehicles.
